Cave Development at Aillwee
Aillwee Cave is one of the oldest known caves in the Burren — and possibly in all of Ireland.
Its formation dates back hundreds of thousands of years, and its earliest history is still visible in the roof of the cave, particularly in the chamber known as Mud Hall.
There, you’ll notice a network of twisting tunnels cut into the rock, known as anastomoses.
These were created by a small underground stream flowing along a bedding plane above a layer of soft mud in the limestone.

From Tiny Stream to Powerful Watercourse
Over time, one of these tiny water channels grew wider, eventually forming an almost perfectly circular tunnel carved by fast-moving water. The remnants of this ancient watercourse — a smooth, half-tube shape — can still be seen throughout the cave today.
This marks the path once taken by a major underground river, which carved a deep trench into the rock, possibly reaching depths of 20 to 30 metres.
Ice, Erosion, and Evolution
As the ice and snow of the last glacial period melted, the underground stream eventually stopped flowing. Over millennia, the cave’s appearance continued to evolve:
The once-deep canyon began to decay, with large stone blocks collapsing from the walls
Mud and debris washed in, slowly infilling the floor
Stalactites and stalagmites began to form, decorating the ceilings and floors with natural mineral sculptures
Today, visitors can walk through this extraordinary space, shaped by water, ice, and time, and experience one of Ireland’s most ancient and geologically significant underground landscapes.
